Djemba, a boy from Kibera was featured in a book by Adam Parsons, Mega-slumming. Djemba talks about his life as a single child growing up in the largest shanty town in sub Saharan Africa. He talks of the social cohesion that exists and how people in this environment have to share to survive. This is what I wanted people to see.

I went to Kibera with a very open mind, I had heard of the violence, the drugs and the HIV, the endless negative imagery of sub Saharan Africa's largest shanty town. When I arrived, I found something quite different. I found people who were trapped in an environment they were unable to remove themselves from, created by an economic and political system they never wanted. I met people who were just trying to get on with life. The vibrancy and the generosity of the people overwhelmed me and made me realise how, in the west, we have lost so muc
