About me:

Winner of over 120 film awards, Joaquin Baldwin is an Annie Award-nominated director and animator from Paraguay, currently living in Los Angeles. His animated films Sebastian's Voodoo and Papiroflexia have been shown in over 300 film festivals, and were both produced at the UCLA Animation Workshop. Joaquin is a proud recipient of a full graduate scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

What excites you about the The Possible Futures Film Contest? What's the most provocative aspect for you?

The categories make this contest extremely relevant and unique. There are a lot of short films out there, but it's hard to find those that try to serve a purpose other than entertainment. Films with content and films with meaning, that's exciting. Also, trip to the Amazon, are you kidding me? I'm in ;)

Where do you find inspiration? What (or who) gives you hope?

I'm very inspired by poetry, probably because my mom is a poet. The simplicity and eloquence a short poem can have is something admirable that I try to convey with my short films. I find hope in science and reason. Humanity needs to start working with long-term goals in mind, and the development of a scientific mentality and a morality not determined by superstition alone are absolutely necessary to make this happen.

How have stories shaped your life? What story does the world need to tell to shape a just and sustainable life?

We all live surrounded by stories, for stories, forming stories. It's impossible to isolate oneself from the impact of storytelling, it shapes us from the moment we start to understand language. I always found an escape from reality, while at the same time having a greater understanding of reality, by immersing myself in stories. I think we all need to tell our own stories, who you are, what you think, what you feel, what your hopes and fears are.
