About me:
I use storytelling to awaken and activate audiences. My stand is for all people to understand our interdependence with nature, starting with youth and families. Through my work as a community leader, co-founder of Bay Localize and BALANCE Films, and national board member with Transition US and the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and Gas, I have realized the importance of shifting humanity's meta-story.
What excites you about the The Possible Futures Film Contest? What's the most provocative aspect for you?
1) The possibility to visit the rainforest of Ecuador, somewhere I've always dreamt of going.
2) The inspiration to make a film about a story I want to live into.
3) The opportunity to use this contest as a platform to help catalyze a youth movement for Nature's Rights.
I firmly believe the stories we tell ourselves shape our identity and our choices. By creating a shared narrative that inspires and uplifts, we can move people from powerlessness to collective action. That's truly provocative!
Where do you find inspiration? What (or who) gives you hope?
My daughter is my inspiration. At 2 weeks old, her mother laid her on my chest. Melia cuddled her head into my neck like a puppy. It changed my life. I went from being a reluctant capitalist to an eco warrior (though it took me years later to realize that this was the turning point). At that moment, I knew being Melia’s Papa was my life’s purpose. When she becomes an adult, I need to be able to look her in the eyes, and tell her I did everything I could to make the world a better place.
How have stories shaped your life? What story does the world need to tell to shape a just and sustainable life?
My life is a story. Transformative stories include a 2 year illness, being a transracial adoptee., etc.. Most present for me is jumping off a figurative cliff to do this work, trusting that my wings will fly. The story that needs to be told from the stage of Earth Summit 2012 is how shared story, music, and edutainment catalyzed a youth movement for Nature's Rights... how Pacha's Pajamas was instrumental... and how the PFFC played a crucial role in spreading the word.
